This 2 CD package is very well done. His voice is excellant and he gives great tips for calming your mind and body. Very clear voice with very sensible and easy things to do.
Rating: 5 / 5
Maybe some of the information in this CD set is really great… I have no idea, because I was too distracted by the speaker’s “acting techniques.” He has a grating habit of attempting to put a little laugh into his voice every other sentence or so, and it comes across so put on that I was actually just waiting to see where he’d fake-laugh next in the middle of a word. Then there was also the forced voice dynamics… a whispery, breathy word every sentence or two even where it made no sense. It felt very much like a rehearsed word-for-word reading.
That, plus the fact that I was bored out of my skull on the first CD when I was able to force myself to pay attention. I was disappointed; I requested the CD because of two main things: I like guided visualizations and thought it would be cool to have some new relaxation techniques to try, and this author has excellent credentials. But there are relatively few visualizations or specific techniques presented here; it’s mostly educational about why the body produces stress responses, the mind-body connection, etc.
It felt like the information you might learn in an introductory college health course, only told in a more remedial fashion. And that remedial fashion included some questionable oversimplifications and some very dubious statistics (such as that 90% of all doctors’ visits are for stress-related problems… really? 90% of my doctors’ visits are because I picked up a germ somewhere and I can’t stop sneezing/coughing/whatever. Sure, you could stretch it and say I got sick because I was stressed… but that would just be a wild guess). The narrative also jumped around like crazy.
I have a feeling I’d like this author a lot better in written form, but this CD set just irritated me. It did not make me ultra calm.

so I am looking to relax and thought this little audiobook might be just the ticket, but it is really just a rehash of what most of us already know (unless you are new to stress or relaxation), the reader/narrator was very distracting (think over the top drama coach), so I am going back to what I already know and a glass of white wine in the hot tub is more fun anyway.

I am not familiar with the previous titles of this author. As a new reader/listener, I was disappointed with this title. It consists of two audio CDs with a total runtime of just under two hours. The set has an awkward start with a rather repetitive overview. There is an eye-roll moment there, where the narrator/MD repeats a couple of times that he didn’t initially realize that working 60-hour shifts was bad for the body. Even as an exaggeration, this sounds like a fail of common sense.
There are some good stuff in the audiobook, but these are things that are pretty much public domain these days. There is another awkward moment where the author praises various supplements and five minutes later directs you to his website to buy them. You are supposed to do that in infomercials, not in a book like this!
The whole set has a feel of being hastily put together, it doesn’t seem to have a natural or organic flow to it (yes, there is irony to that considering the subject!)
The one thing that I did like was the packaging, but obviously that can’t save the day.
If you value your money, I would recommend checking it out at the library first to make sure it has enough material that are of interest to you before committing your money.

I assumed this was a CD to pop in and listen to and relax to. In reality it is much more an audiobook and for me the topic of being calm is hard to follow through an audio book.
You really need a large chunk of time to listen to this. I falsely thought I could listen a little here a little there while cooking or cleaning. I almost felt like it’s better suited for listening to in the car or on the airplane.
Don’t expect to walk away feeling “ultra calm” but perhaps learn a few nutritional tips or exercises if you are completely new to the topic.
